Every August 31, communities across the world observe International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) - a global movement to remember lives lost, reduce stigma, and advance overdose prevention efforts.

In Oklahoma, the alarming rise in drug overdose deaths makes this day especially urgent. It’s a moment to unite, reflect, and act, knowing that every life lost is a preventable tragedy, and recovery is within reach.

Let’s honor the motto of IOAD: “Time to remember. Time to act.”\

Overdose Trends in Oklahoma: A Crisis Grows

  • After a decline from 2016 to 2019, Oklahoma experienced a staggering 129% increase in unintentional overdose deaths from 2019 to 2023.

  • Methamphetamine was involved in three out of five overdose deaths in 2023. Meanwhile, fentanyl-related deaths jumped nearly 15-fold—accounting for 90% of opioid fatalities.

  • These statistics are more than numbers—they represent communities in pain and demand our action.

Recognizing the Signs & Responding to Overdose

Common Overdose Indicators:

  • Unresponsiveness or difficulty waking

  • Slow, shallow breathing or choking/gurgling sounds

  • Pale or bluish skin, especially around lips and nails

  • Pinpoint (very small) pupils

What to Do:

  • Call 9-1-1 immediately

  • Administer naloxone (Narcan)—available without prescription across Oklahoma

  • Support safe transport and provide comfort as needed
